Race report

Compared to last week’s race, things didn’t go so well today, although when I compare the race to my first of the season I did just fine.  I finished, but at the back of the pack.  I felt fine through most of the race — never in danger of getting dropped.  There were times when I got annoyed at the pack because they were going slow.  The hill didn’t bother me much at all.

I messed up on the last lap, though; I got myself in a bad position and spent much of the backstretch riding into the wind so when I got to the bottom of the hill I was tired and had no energy to sprint.  And then my calf muscles started cramping — just a few twinges, but enough to keep me from riding hard.  So I sort of limped over the finish line, if one can say that about a bike race.  Our average was 20.3, a little slower than last week.

When so much of an individual’s racing strategy depends on the group, race outcomes can vary so much. Good sticking it out for the finish, no matter how much you limped!

You’re right Leah — criterium racing is so different from time trials or running races — it’s definitely not just a matter of who’s fastest!
